Mauritius: People

Mauritius: Contemporary Photography

Back to Mauritius

After a long silence due to a stay in France during which I could develop my films 120, I'm back in photography.

Banian, Banyan, Indian fig, or Affouche Lafouche in Creole is a large tree with mystical allure, it is a tree sacred in Hinduism, called the tree of life symbol.
In Mauritius there are often 'Kalima' in the shadow of these sturdy plants. The worship of Hindu Bhojpuri Kalima comes from the Indian workers. We just make ritual sacrifices to the Kalima as bananas and other fruits. The Kalimas are protective goddesses whose effigies are placed under the trees.
